Updating the National Doll Class Directory

by Karen Ryan on 06/22/2010

You all know how frustrating it is to be looking at an interesting website and go to their Links to see what cool places they recommend only to discover that most of them are no longer active. Failure to do a little housekeeping to remove these links that are out of business just emphasizes the slump that the doll community has been trying so hard to weather, and makes the host site appear to be part of the problem as well.

We’re trying to do our share by updating the National Doll Class Directory. So far I’ve emailed each class that we have listed in about half of the states and am requesting a return email to verify that they’re still holding classes. Once I hear back from each of these classes, I’ll contact the next bunch. Some of you have responded right away, and I really appreciate the time you have taken to do so and hope to hear from the rest of you soon.

It’s kind of strange. On one hand, I have to admit that it’s quite a job, but on the other hand, when considering how big our country is and how many classes there must be out there that I haven’t been able to reach at all, it’s a bit discouraging to only show one or two classes in some of our states. I still get enquiries on almost a weekly basis from new people looking for classes, so I know there’s plenty of interest out there, but I’m stumped when it comes to thinking up new ways to try to find the neighborhood classes for them to attend. Anyway, it’s obvious that the job of putting together a comprehensive directory isn’t done yet!

For those of you who may be visiting this website for the first time, let me just say that listings in the Doll Class Directory are free and the Directory may be accessed for free by anyone visiting this site. The sole purpose of the Directory is to help potential doll makers find a class. Please let us know about any classes you might be familiar with that are not currently in the Directory.

Working with miniatures requires a steady hand and I would think even more patience than the larger dolls. I’m glad to hear that you’re teaching this skill to others! And dolls are dolls!
