So, blame it on the weather…

Well, I’ve tried everything, but I still have trouble getting my castings out of the mold. They still take forever to dry. Same molds I’ve poured without problems in the past. All the same brands of porcelain slip at the usual consistency for each.

The only variable is this unusually damp weather. True, I live in Oregon, and we get more than our share of rain, and that hasn’t changed. But this year, we seem to be having more than normal. Here it is June already, and all it does is rain … rain … rain.

Usually June in Oregon means sunny days, kids in shorts or splashing in the pool, flowers blooming happily in the flower beds and hanging baskets, and lawn sprinklers going every few days. But this year is different. Maybe it started out by not having as cold of a winter as usual. Just lots of rain. Then spring came along, and it was still raining. And it hasn’t quite yet! Oh, we’ve had days where we see the sun peaking through the clouds for a few hours here and there, but it hasn’t been nice and warm yet. Just damp … damp … and more damp! Even the flowers are protesting! No sooner do they bloom that rain or hail beats the blossoms apart! The only thing happy around here is the weeds! I’m talking mega-weeds!

We tried putting an electric heater in the bedroom that we turned into a mold storage room … You know, shelves everywhere stacked with molds, even the closet is nothing but shelves stacked with doll supplies! We ran the heater for a few weeks, and I do have to confess that the molds I poured during that time seemed to work pretty much as usual. But you all know how much electricity those things draw! My electric bill was through the roof! We couldn’t keep that up for long!

So here I am, right back where I started. Heater off and frequently leaving castings set in the mold over night before they’re ready to release. I don’t know about you, but I just have to blame it on the weather. Kids can’t wait for school to get out … mothers look forward to it starting again … grandparents are anticipating visits from the little rug rats, and I’m counting the days until it actually turns hot and dry! How sick is that?
