Seeley’s & the New York Doll Products Company

by Karen Ryan on 02/22/2010

The doll community is buzzing about the latest word found in a February 8th press release concerning the demise of Seeley’s, and the new company, New York Doll Products owned by Kuniko Koseki, which purchased the rights to the mold line last year, and now to the rights to manufacture the china paints, porcelain slip and the composition doll bodies. Seeley fans are delighted to hear that the products they had come to depend upon will soon be available to them once again.

Word has it that New York Doll Products, also known as NYDP, is working as fast as possible to complete necessary renovations to the manufacturing facility which is located in Otego, New York.

If you are one of those unlucky people who placed a mold order through Seeley’s for New York Doll Products during the transition time and after the shut down last summer, and still haven’t received anything, you can contact the new owners at orders@newyorkdollproducts.com and they’ll get it sorted out for you. Good news, huh? Their phones aren’t up yet, but will be as soon as their offices are completed.

If you want to watch their progress as they get ready to open, you can sign up as a Friend on Facebook and keep up on the latest developments as they happen. Just go to http://www.facebook.com, and enter New York Doll Products, and there is a place to sign up as a Friend.

It’s exciting to watch the birth of a new company to serve doll makers. We all look forward to having more supplies available. Welcome, Kuniko!

Hi Karen,
I used to have a doll studio in Ocean Park, WA. We moved to Castle Rock, WA. in 2004. My husband was building me a new studio and a garage (for him), when he fell from the roof and died from a massive head injury. So, I won’t have a place to do dolls anymore, and I have lost the heart to do them anyway. However, I do have a 2001 electronic kiln that I need to sell. I also have molds and slip that would go with the kiln. If you know of anyone that wants to buy a kiln, Please let me know and I would contact them. I bought this kiln (Skuktt) from Georgies of Portland. My name is Ruth Cade and my phone # is 360-274-6591. I haven’t a price as yet. Depending on the demand. I paid $2000.00 for it brand new. Thank you for any information. I used to take classes from Margret Reeder and buy supplies from Seeley’s. If you want to contact Margret that would be fine with me.

Ruth, I’m so very sorry to hear about the loss of your husband, and can certainly understand your loss of heart about doing dolls! I’m emailing you privately about the items you wish to sell, and will be happy to do what I can to help you!

Nice to hear from you, Cordelia! If you want Seeley’s slip, the same formulas will be available through New York Doll Products soon. their website is up and they are currently having sales on the Seeley’s stock that they bought out. Check them out at http://www.nydpshopping.com. However Ultra Chic matches these colors and has a very good product and is available now in our Yakkity Yak Store on this website. The prices look high, but include the total shipping expenses. I have discounted each gallon of slip, so it’s really cheaper than you would end up paying else where. Come back and see us again!

I have a bisque doll with markings on the back of the head “TAMMY” 1988 by Corliss Scott. During my research I have only been able to locate a doll by Corliss Scott named “Deidre” however, that is when I also discovered that these dolls were production dolls made by Seeley and then distributed to various artist to paint, cloth etc. I am trying to determine her value but have been unsuccessful and would appreciate any information you might be willing to share. The Deidre doll reflects a collectable value of $850, but found it selling on Ebay for $350.

Since they were made from Seeley molds, Seeleys must have had painting instructions for them. As you know, New York Doll Products bought them out and may be able to help you with this. Here is their website info: http://www.nydpshopping.com
