“Cutie” by Loretta Fox
Loretta contacted me a few weeks ago and mentioned that she was trying to get back into porcelain doll making and was currently working on an 11” Kewpie doll named Cutie which she made from a Bell mold. She was kind enough to share pictures of the finished project with us today.
She also mentioned that she discovered that one of the doll’s legs was shorter than the other! I had no idea that that was the case. Loretta thought at first that she had mistakenly used a leg from another doll that she had poured, but after checking the mold discovered that the legs really were different lengths. Does anyone know why it was made this way? Loretta guessed that it might have something to do with posing her, but neither one of us really knows.
Whatever the reason for the difference in leg lengths, it certainly didn’t do any harm, as you can see in these pictures. And be sure to note the cute crocheted outfit that Loretta made up especially for her.
Nice job, Loretta! Welcome back to doll making, and we hope to see much more of your work here in the future!

Another proud doll mama
I thought you might enjoy seeing a picture of Bessie Lelack of Salem, Oregon with her very first doll! Bessie made it for a granddaughter, but I think she’s going to have a hard time parting with it! Her very lucky granddaughter is going to have a lovely keepsake to remember grandma by in years to come. Bessie is almost done with doll number two, and has started cleaning doll number three. These are also earmarked for granddaughters.
Ellaine Combs of Royal Affair Dolls in Grain Valley, Missouri sent in these pictures of her beautiful dolls to share with us. She says they’re some of her personal favorites, but she made them some time ago from old Byron molds which may not be on the market any longer. Note the lovely faces on these dolls! Nice work, Elaine!
Elaine does doll repairs and restorations, has a doll museum, and teaches daily classes. If you live in the Grain Valley area and are looking for someone to help you learn to make dolls, this is your lady! She has been making dolls for over 50 years and also creates look-a-like dolls on commission from photographs. Ellaine attended the Seeley School of Dollmaking, studied at the Nelson Art Gallery of Kansas City for five years, and more recently studied at Kwan Wu’s School of Sculpting and Art. You can visit her site and museum at http://www.royaleaffairdolls.com. You will also find Ellaine’s contact information listed bothe in the Doll Class Directory and the Doll Repairs Directory here at this site. Thanks so much, Ellaine, for sending in your pictures!
Take a look at this gorgeous bride doll that Sue of Forever Yours Dolls was kind enough to share with us! The expression on the doll’s face is absolutely glowing, and I’m sure it captured the bride’s expression exactly. Sue’s good friend, Judy Brown, made this particular wedding gown and did a spectacular job of it. Sue not only is an award winning dollmaker, and teaches doll classes, but she also produces fantastic look-alike dolls from photos sent in by her customers. If you have a picture of your loved one from some special occasion that you would like to have memorialized, Sue is just the person who can do it for you. Take a look at her efforts on her website at http://www.foreveryoursdolls.com. Good job Sue, and thanks for sharing!
