Make your own transport board

If you teach doll classes away from home, and need to transport your students’ freshly painted doll parts home to fire in your kiln, you might find our transport boards as handy as we do.

3/4” board 36” long and 10” wide
2 pieces of 1” dowel that are 7 ½” long
4 pieces of ½” dowel that are 7 ½” long
4 pieces of ½” dowel that are 4 ½” long
Wood glue
1” wood drill bit
½” wood drill bit
Drill
Rubber Mallet or hammer

  1. Draw a line down the center of the board from end to end.
  2. Measure in 4” from each end on this line and make a mark.
  3. Center the 1” dowels on these marks and draw around them.
  4. Measure in 10” from each end of the board and 2 ½” from each edge and mark these 4 spots. These 4 spots will be for the 7 ½” long pieces of ½” dowel.
  5. Measure 15” from each end and of the board and 2 ½” from the sides and mark these 4 spots. These 4 spots will be for the shorter pieces of ½” dowel.
  6. Using a 1” wood drill, drill a ½” deep hole where the two 1” dowels were circled.
  7. Using a ½” wood drill, drill ½” deep holes on the other eight dowel marks.
  8. Put a small amount of wood glue in each hole and set the dowels firmly in place. Use the mallet or hammer to set them in place if necessary. Let dry, then paint the board. Each transport will handle everything up to two dolls 28” dolls the size of Tom Sawyer.

You may want to cut 6”-7” squares of flannel to drape over the ends of the dowels before putting the painted pieces on them to keep the pieces from rattling against the wood during transport. Ours works likes a charm!
